Case Study

Problems and Solutions

ACTRA UNION CHILD ACTOR

Problem

  • As a union production, our child actor could only work for a set amount of time each day with specifically timed breaks.
  • Active child actor meant keeping a fun and safe environment outside of the main set during down time.

Solution

  • Required a timely set schedule with no leaks. Shooting quickly and problem solving on the go was mandatory.
  • The pressure to finish our work in time to get the proper breaks for our main cast pulled off well with a dedicated and timely crew.
  • Had a dedicated space for child and a great bonding with crew.

Takeaway

  • Experience working with union cast and regulations.

LOCATION + INSURANCE CLAIM

Problem

  • Our budget could not afford the desired location, and there were many concerns  including wallpaper permissions to get the retro-future look we needed.
  • The wallpaper ripped the paint on the walls, and damages were not enough to be claimed under our specific insurance policy.
Solution
  • Rerouted to other creative problem solving solutions in order to reduce impact on budget.
  • Director connected with his network to repaint the wall with professional assistance.

Result

  • This restored our budget to a manageable quota with budget contingencies.

CROWDSOURCED INDIE BUDGET

  • Crafted a budget of $5000 mainly through Directors, Producer, and Director of Photography.
  • My role included marketing, sourcing and handling the budget.
  • Large Production design cost and preparation time was required to wallpaper the rented studio and build a life-size robot costume.

STUNT COORDINATION

Problem

    • Hired a Stunt Coordinator who was open for the timeslot we were shooting at for only 3 of 4 production days.

    • Needed to find another union stunt coordinator last minute, or reconfigure the shooting plan to avoid the stunts that day.

    Solution

    • Found another Stunt Coordinator as a replacement, which would come halfway through our shooting day.

    • Reconfigured the shooting order on day of, in order to make it happen.

Takeaway

  • Experience working with union Stunt Coordination in film.
